Bangladesh missions in the Kingdom yesterday celebrated the 42nd anniversary of their country’s independence in Riyadh and Jeddah.
In Riyadh, Ambassador Mohammed Shahidul Islam hoisted the country’s flag before a large gathering of community members. Officials from Biman Airlines and prominent community members and government officials were present at the flag hoisting ceremony held at the embassy premises.
The choir from the Bangladesh International School (English Section) in Riyadh recited the national anthem with other participants.
The morning events included recitation of the Holy Qur’an, reading of the messages issued by the Acting President Mohammed Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Foreign Minister Dipu Moni.
Special prayers were offered seeking salvation of the departed souls of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and the members of his family, and freedom fighters for their sacrifices during the War of Independence.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that independence was earned through sacrifice, which was the people’s greatest achievement.
To ensure that this achievement remains meaningful, he said, the spirit of liberation should be spread to every nook and corner of the country.
Turning to his countrymen in the Kingdom, he called upon all Bangladeshis to work hard to brighten the image of Bangladesh in Saudi Arabia and contribute to the country’s economic development.
Highlighting the significance and spirit of the day, he underlined the need for renewing the commitment to remain united and make concerted efforts for the socio-economic development of Bangladesh.
Ambassador Islam also thanked the Bangladesh expatriates for participating in the economic development of Bangladesh by sending remittances through official banking channels.
While highlighting the progress of the existing government in different sectors, the ambassador said the days are not too far when Bangladesh will occupy important positions in international arena and it will become a Golden Bengal.
In the evening, Ambassador Islam and his wife Shahnaz hosted a reception at the Tuwaiq Palace in the Diplomatic Quarter to mark the event. Senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, businessmen, journalists and community members were present at the event.
