This is regarding the article “America in no position to lecture Sri Lanka” by Aijaz Zaka Syed.
I think the author should study the facts before drawing a parallel between Sri Lanka and Syria. Is he aware what a brutal force the LTTE was? How many innocent Sri Lankan citizens they killed in three decades.
Who has compiled a list of the crimes of the LTTE, which was supported by India and ignored by the West?
Sri Lanka is a full democracy unlike the US. It elects the leaders by popular vote only. These LTTE atrocities took place during the reign of more than one political party and with several different leaders over a period of 30 years.
The country voted a great leader like President Mahinda Rajapaksa into power who promised to eliminate the LTTE and bring prosperity to the country. He kept his promise unlike the US leaders who promised to eliminate Al-Qaeda and instead started two failed wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that has bankrupted the country while Al-Qaeda still remains strong.
President Rajapaksa has turned the country around and it is on the way to prosperity with the help of China. The Western world is trying to destabilize the country to get at China. — N. Fernando, New York
