Bangladesh celebrates 42nd anniversary of independence

The Bangladeshi consulate in Jeddah celebrated their country’s 42nd anniversary of independence on Tuesday.
Mohamed Nazmul Islam, consul general of Bangladesh, said the day reminded the Bangladesh community of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of the nation whose charismatic leadership graced Bangladesh’s independence.
“This day is to celebrate the promise of freedom since our independence. Bangladesh has made continued efforts to consolidate democracy and attain economic development and a better life for its citizens. We have been working closely with our friends in the international community to promote peace and stability across the globe,” said Islam.
The Bangladeshi government is working hard to drive Bangladesh into a digital era by 2021.
“We are moving in pursuit of achieving the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals as adopted at the Millennium Summit in 2000. These goals include fighting poverty and extremism, empowering women, disaster management and coping with the challenges posed by global warming and climate change,” said Islam.
He explained the progress of the country in agriculture, education, health and the communication sector. He commended the Saudi-Bangladeshi relationship, which is scaling new heights.
“The 10th Joint Economic Commission meeting between the two countries was held in Riyadh very recently.
Both sides agreed to strengthen their existing cooperation on a wide range of issues, including manpower, trade and investment, infrastructure development, power, energy, agriculture, education and security,” he added. He thanked the Saudi Government for the generous hosting of Bangladeshi expatriates and expressed hope that the relations between Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia would continue to grow in leaps and bounds for the benefit of both peoples.
Gowher Rizvi, adviser to the prime minster of Bangladesh, who visits Jeddah on a regular basis for meetings with the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), congratulated the Bangladeshi community and praised the Saudi-Bangladeshi relationship.
“Saudi Arabia is our proud and distant friend and for that we are grateful. Today, we are celebrating our 42 years of freedom with pride,” he said. He gave a brief account of the Bangladeshi history and struggle.
Farid Azhar, head of finance and administration at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Makkah province, along with diplomats, dignitaries and community members, were also present on the occasion.
