This refers to the report “Kingdom urges efforts to reduce poverty” (March 30). It is very much heartening to note that Saudi Arabia is focusing on the need to make joint efforts to reduce poverty globally. Surely, the Kingdom can play an important role in combating poverty by ensuring cheap availability of fuel in the international market, as this will allow developing countries to invest more on poverty alleviation programs in their respective countries. Also, in many parts of the world, climatic change is immensely affecting farm production.
Therefore, it is important that the world uses advanced technology, which can help tackle the impact of climate change. But the problem is that many farmers, especially in poor countries, cannot afford the cost of new irrigational technology.
I think governments of these countries should provide financial assistance to those farmers. Should these farmers get the required help, they can cultivate their land much more efficiently and this will lead to rise in production which will ultimately help fight poverty.
Also, education plays a very important role in country’s economic development. If country’s masses are highly educated, they can contribute a lot in economic development. — Anees Lokhande, Alkhobar
