HEXHAM, England: Jockey Ryan Mania was rushed to a hospital Sunday after falling on his return to action a day after winning the British Grand National for the first time.
Mania’s mount Stagecoach Jasper came down at speed early on the final circuit in an afternoon race at Hexham Racecourse, and the 23-year-old jockey received what appeared to be a kick between his shoulder blades.
He was treated for around 30 minutes on the track in northern England and was described as being conscious before being flown by air ambulance to a hospital for further assessment on neck and back injuries.
“At the moment is he’s conscious and talking and he is being taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for further assessment,” said course clerk James Armstrong. “Hopefully all will be fine, but we won’t have any more news until later.”
On Saturday, Mania produced one of the biggest surprises in Grand National history as 66-1 outsider Auroras Encore romped to a nine-length victory in the world’s top steeplechase.
