The King Fahd Causeway, which links Saudi Arabia with Bahrain, shut down for two and a half hours yesterday following a glitch in computer system.
Saudis and non-Saudis came from Qatar, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia to visit Bahrain this afternoon but could not enter as the system was down.
Mualla Al-Otaibi, media affairs supervisor at Causeway Passports, spoke to Arab News about the problem, saying: “There was a failure in the computer system and we have now sorted out the problem.”
Muhammad, a traveler from Dammam, said: “I planned to go to Bahrain today only to find myself and my family stuck in a queue for over four hours.” He added that the system will be up and running again in two hours but there will be traffic at both sides. In the end, I will lose the whole day on the causeway.”
Other visitors decided to go back to Saudi Arabia after waiting in their cars for hours.
Students missed lectures and one of them said that lines earmarked for students and special needs people on the causeway “are defective and there is no organization.”
