Darat Safeya Binzagr Gallery exhibited the work of 60 participants in its annual cultural art contest at Roshana Mall on Thursday.
The contestants, aged between 10 to 16, hailed from different schools in Jeddah and submitted their artwork to a jury panel composed of prominent local artists.
“Our annual contest for children witnessed wide participation from students across Jeddah this year. We received 300 applicants and shortlisted 60 male and female students,” said Safeya Binzagr, owner and founder of the gallery and contest, adding, “Every year our contest is based on a traditional theme, with the aim of infusing cultural appreciation with artistic education.”
The contest theme this year revolved around decorating the conventional water jar, also known by locals as “Al-Shurba.” A tie ensued between two participants, prompting the jury to award them both the second place position.
The winner of the contest Suha Fatima Mohuddin told Arab News that she was not expecting to be awarded first place in the contest.
“I am 15-year-old, so this was my last chance to participate with Darat Safeya Binzagr. I am so excited about coming in first place; I didn’t expect it at all,” said Mohuddin.
According to the contest rules, the students are expected to execute the artistic designs they created alone in front of the jury.
The jury committee, which consists of five Saudi artists including Safeya Binzagr, selected and presented the awards to the winners.
Mohuddin was awarded the first place, while Badriya Mohammed and Lulu Bujahri came in second place, with Lubna Mohammed given third place and Marooj Mohammed and Saliha Han in fourth and fifth places respectively.
The top ten participants were Hiba Mohammed, Rozan Saleh, Simay Kisacan, Gheed Ahmed, Raneem Abdullah, Ayat Waleed, Raged mohammed, Heba Hannan, Salma Ayman, Nour Aldeen Alnaser.
