Ghoneim Nasser Buqami, managing director of Motabaqah’s Saudi Specialized Laboratories, said that 90 percent of imported toys in 2012 were not compliant with Saudi specifications. Most of these toys contain hazardous substances such as lead.
“The Commerce Ministry is supervising and monitoring products of the markets to ensure their compliance and safety for consumers by taking samples and testing them,” he said during a press conference.
“In 2011, about 45 percent of imported perfumes and cosmetics were not complaint with Saudi standards,” Buqami said, adding that the Specialized Laboratories played a pivotal role in the compliance of such items with specifications.
Motabaqah is one of the companies endorsed by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and the Saudi Commission for Specifications and Standards for quality control.
Buqami said that Motabaqah has seven laboratories located at all entry points, with another nine to be established soon.
