Six members of a Pakistani family died in a car crash on Wednesday morning near Zulum, 170 km from Taif, on the Riyadh-Jeddah Highway.
The fatal accident occurred when Mohammed Ghulam Chirag and his family were heading to Makkah to perform Umrah. Their car had apparently swerved onto the wrong side of the road and smashed into a trailer heading to Riyadh from Jeddah.
Civil Defense and Saudi Red Crescent personnel pulled the bodies from the wreckage. There were three survivors including the trailer driver, also a Pakistani.
Sixteen-year-old Bushra, a survivor, sustained head injuries and had fractures to her left leg and hand. She is currently being treated at King Abdulaziz Specialist Hospital in Taif. Bushra is a niece of Chirag. Bushra's parents traveled from Jubail yesterday to see her in hospital. Relatives in Jubail also visited her yesterday.
Another relative of the family and the truck driver were treated at a hospital in Zulum for minor injuries.
While speaking to Arab News by phone, Bushra seemed unaware of the fact that her cousins, uncle and aunt had died in the accident.
The dead were identified as Chirag, 44, Zeenat Saleem, 38, Maaz Saleem, 13, Sarah Fatima, 6, Kanin Haider, 2, and Zahid Latif, 22. Their bodies were taken to King Faisal Hospital in Taif. The family is from Multan in Pakistan.
