The new buildings of the General Prison and Correctional Facilities in Jeddah are the most advanced in the history of the Kingdom, said its director, Brig. Ahmad Al-Shahrani.
“The four buildings are similar to hotel suites. They include 32 spacious cells accommodating up to 60 inmates in small adjacent rooms,” he told a local newspaper. Each cell has its own sunny area, recreational grounds for football and an area for prayer and dining.
Within three days, 2,000 inmates were transferred to the new premises in buses. The inmates expressed their joy over being moved to the new cells.
In addition to the new buildings, the inmates will enjoy new equipment and a set of awareness programs that will enhance their education and prepare them to go back into society as productive citizens.
“Fire safety measures were provided, including an electronic system in each cell that can be used during fire emergencies,” said Al-Shahrani.
