High on drugs? Blame it on low education!

About 73 percent of drug addicts in the Kingdom had an education of less than intermediate level, according to a study conducted by researcher Abdul Elah Al-Sharief. “This shows that the lack of education is one of the important factors that promote drug abuse in the country,” he said.
He added that 46.2 percent among the drug addicts surveyed for the research were unemployed. The study was presented at a conference titled Towards Effective Strategy For Educating the Public on Dangers of Drugs at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah.
About 73.31 percent of people surveyed started taking drugs at the age of 15 to 20, while 23.98 percent at the age of 20 to 25.
“The main reason for tasting drugs by 77.8 of the surveyed was their association with bad friends, followed by free time (63.8 percent) and just for experiencing (58.4 percent),” Al-Sharief said. Failure in exams also encouraged many students to take drugs.
