The Riyadh Municipality has awarded development projects and services to local contracting companies for implementation and maintenance, according to a municipality source. Those projects are part of the approved municipality’s budget for the financial year 2013-2014.
They include SR 1.6 billion worth of maintenance and drainage projects for handling floodwaters and rain with a total value of SR 1.9 billion, in addition to SR 542 million projects for implementing the second phase of the King Abdullah International Gardens and a number of parks.
The projects also include 10 new contracts with national companies for cleaning services in Riyadh with a total value of SR 2.5 billion. The capital city has been transformed into a beehive of activity, marked by a slew of major infrastructure works and services undertaken as part of the approved projects in the budget for the current fiscal year. Earlier this year, Riyadh implemented 3,088 projects worth SR 278 billion according to the monitoring and follow-up body at the High Commission for Riyadh Development (HCRD).
According to Riyadh Mayor Abdullah A. Al-Muqbel, these projects were approved in the current budget. The Riyadh Municipality began to put them in the open competitions following the immediate release of the budget.
He said his office was keen on completing the signing procedures and awarding the project during the final months of the current year. He noted that implemented projects included the prevention of flash floods through storm water drains in Riyadh neighborhoods. He said the municipality has also embarked on one of the largest development projects in the capital, the “Valley of Al-Sally.”
It is one of the most important projects, which involves implementation of channels and networks for rainwater drainage and floods that play havoc with the valley of Al-Sally. The project is estimated to cost SR 988 million.
“During the next few months, the city will see the beginning of the largest project for the cleanliness of the capital that will make Riyadh one of the cleanest capitals,” the mayor said, adding that the projects now in progress are going according to schedule. Municipality officials are monitoring the projects closely.
“We are implementing maintenance projects for the improvement of asphalt pavements and lighting and we are developing roads and utilities. This year, the city is implementing projects to beautify the major city entrances and other projects for the implementation of bridges and tunnels on the axes of traffic, as well as projects to improve and develop roads and streets, in addition to improving traffic flow within neighborhoods and traffic safety at mosques and schools,” said the mayor.
He added there are other projects for the development of pedestrian paths and sidewalks, in addition to creating administrative centers.
