Subcontractors for phone and power companies are rushing to fill trenches for fiber optics and cables in Riyadh’s Malaz district following a report by Arab News last Tuesday that residents in the area were complaining that they could not park their vehicles in usual slots because of the unfilled trenches.
“The subcontractors started working on Thursday on the trenches. They continued work today as well,” Haider Baksh, a Pakistani building caretaker, told Arab News yesterday. He, however, added that the trench affecting the residents in the area was “just half-finished.”
A visit to the area showed a group of 10 Egyptians and a Bangladeshi working to fill a long trench for the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC).
M. Jedah, the Egyptian supervisor for the subcontractor, said he hoped that filling would be finished today. The contractor has a one-and-a-half km project for the SEC.
An eight-man group for Fawaris Rawabi Contracting Est., subcontractor for Mobily, was also busy asphalting a road to finish the job. The subcontractor has a 3-km project for Mobily.
Unfinished canal trenching was due to a crackdown on subcontractors’ illegal workers, who had taken time off to correct their job status.
