New points system to cut down accidents

Reckless drivers will lose their licenses if they get 24 points for violations under a new traffic system to be introduced soon, according to a top traffic official here.
Maj. Gen. Abdulrahman Al-Muqbel, the director general of the traffic department, said that a plan is being developed to implement the new points system.
If a driver accumulates 24 points, the traffic authorities will withdraw his license, he said.
The most serious traffic violations include speeding, running a traffic light and driving against oncoming traffic.
“Each one of these violations will incur six points under the system,” added Al-Muqbel.
He said the traffic department could now offer drivers new electronic services to transfer car ownership and renew licenses, under certain conditions.
He said the department recently signed an agreement with Saudi Post to print out forms and documents and deliver them to beneficiaries within two days.
Referring to the problem of temporary registration number plates, Al-Muqbel said: “Some businesses and individuals buy cars from abroad and attach temporary registration numbers without registering the required data, which is a big threat to the national security of the Kingdom.”
To address this problem, the traffic department was now working with Saudi Customs not to grant any temporary plates until all required data are recorded.
