The resignation of BJP patriarch L. K. Advani has sent shock waves across the political community in India. Advani, 85, resigned from all three party posts.
While party president Rajnath Singh said he has not accepted the resignation, some senior party leaders are appealing to the controversial leader to reconsider his move.
D. Raja, leader of the Communist Party of India, told Arab News that it shows the BJP is undergoing a political crisis. “Revolt within the BJP has exposed the party. Exit of Advani in such a way will affect the party in coming days.”
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor mockingly said: “So this is why they call BJP ‘a party with a difference’! In Congress our leaders defer to each other, in BJP they differ with each other.”
Omar Abdullah, Jammu and Kashmir chief minister commented: “If Advani’s opinion didn’t matter to the BJP yesterday, why is his resignation a crisis for it today?”
Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi claimed yesterday he had talked to Advani and got his blessings. RJD leader Ramkripal Yadav criticized Modi for making a false claim. “Modi said yesterday that Advaniji’s consent has been taken. It now means he was lying. It’s sad.”
Senior lawyer and a suspended senior BJP member Ram Jethmalani, said: “I don’t think Advani is a big asset to the BJP. Only Modi is qualified to lead the BJP, not Advani, Sushma or Yashwant.”
