The National Water Company recently approved a demand from the Municipal Council of Jeddah to exempt citizens affected by sewage floods from fines.
The decision was reached at a meeting with the Jeddah Municipality. The meeting was chaired by the deputy of the Municipal Council of Jeddah, Abdullah Al-Muhammadi, and attended by the director of the Jeddah Business Unit, Abdullah Al-Assaf.
Al-Assaf said that one reason for the floods is densely populated neighborhoods that are heavily reliant on an old sewage network in dire need of renovation.
“Urgent solutions have been put in place to address these problems,” he said, adding that a sum of SR 250 million had been allocated to install new sewage networks, pumping stations and connections in 50 neighborhoods throughout Jeddah.
During the meeting, Al-Assaf presented a visual display of the mechanisms operating the networks and a sketch showing the course of the sub-networks with their distribution in the Jeddah neighborhoods, where homes will be directly connected to the networks. The council recommended that the problem of sloping and lowering of street levels resulting from deep earth excavations should be addressed soon.
