Don’t ban WhatsApp

This refers to Sarah Abdullah’s report, “CITC: WhatsApp to be blocked before Ramadan,” (June 14) in which it has been said that the Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) has announced that it will block WhatsApp before Ramadan if the US-based instant free-messaging application does not comply with the requirements set by the Kingdom’s telecom regulator.

Blocking applications is not the solution. Applications like Skype, FB, Viber are being used by many foreigners in Saudi Arabia. Foreign women in particular are using it for long distance calls because it is free.
There should of course be an age restriction in using these applications, definitely not a full ban. — Nikhat M. Khan, By email
