The usual suspects, led by multititled Alex Arellano, dominated the roll of winners in the FGA Kalayaan Cup 2013 golf tournament at the InterContinental Palms Golf Club last Friday here.
Arellano won the Best Gross trophy shooting 60, just 4 over on the par-56 City Center layout.
The father and son tandem of Resty and Christer Rem Sibug continued to score success on a course that has always been kind to them. Resty, president of Filipino Golf Association, won Class A (handicap 0-6) with a net score of 59 while Rem claimed Class B (7-12) crown on 58.
Veteran golfer Edwin Añonuevo was the first runner-up in Class A after shooting a net 60 with Richard Gaas, back in action after being out for a long time due to an industrial accident, second runner-up on 62.
Allan Malawanda and another veteran, Mario Marimon, completed the first three winners in Class B via the countback after they tied on 59.
John Calupas, another second generation FGA member and son of Romy Calupas, won the Stableford format Class C on 36 points. Jun Paner and Jun Bantug took the first runner-up and second runner-up on 35 and 34 points respectively.
To Danny Naval went the Best Senior Golfer trophy on 58. The nearest to the pin award on Nos. 3 and 17 over 130 and 150 yards were nabbed by Calupas and Joe Vallado.
The 18-hole event organized by the FGA as part of the 115th Philippine Independence Day celebrations attracted 38 players, among them, Jay Japos who especially traveled from Jeddah but had to settle for a prize in the raffle division as did Noel Alipoyo.
Vice Consul Redentor Genotiva attended the tournament on behalf of Ambassador Ezzedin H. Tago of the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh. He awarded prizes to the winners and inducted into office FGA’s 2013 officers as follows: Sibug, president; Fem Baracoso, secretary; Steve Marpuri, treasurer; and Ed “Eboi” Razon, auditor. Howard Laurente, who served for two terms as FGA president, received a plaque of appreciation.
FGA would like to thank Ambassador Tago for his support and members who donated raffle prizes namely Abner Macapagal, Aries Ramirez, Ben Bollozos, Ono “Boy” Zablan, Añonuevo, Bantug, Jun Geronimo, Ben Maddariaga, Tony Lizardo, Laurente, Marimon, Sibug and Joe Vallado. Also, FGA thanked InterContinental Golf Club management Mounir Melliti, Baby Joseph and Mohd. Anwar Naz and their team for their assistance and support to all FGA tournaments.
