At the halfway point of the season, the 4th Riyadh Triathletes Biathlon produced some new names on the podium confirming their progress and hard work during the season.
Last week it was reported that Cameron Ball would surely have a podium this season and so it proved to be with a magnificent win to claim the top spot.
With the race distance of 650m swimming and 4km running it was an opportunity for the stronger swimmers to do well with the weight of swimming portion in their favor.
The race started with three heats for the swimmers. As expected the swimming element proved the business end of the race where the most could be gained and lost, as the six fastest swimming times claimed the top six positions. A tough fight took place right on the first out off the water between Michael Fox (Heat 3) and Kate Scott (Heat 2). Scott, excellent in the pool all season, was the fastest swimmer in 10:06, a slim lead of 4 seconds from Michael Fox on 10:10. Behind them a group of three, led out by Alistair McDermott and including Cameron Ball and Alex Carinan, followed the head of the race into transition.
It was not one of the fastest transitions seen during the season, but a place where valuable time is won and lost, the best people through transition picked up nearly a minute on the average time which translated by up to 250m on the road.
With the athletes on the run, Cameron soon picked off two men ahead (McDermott and Fox). His only worry was being passed on the road and so he set himself to control the distance over the chasers. Gerd Muetze, sixth out of the water but never out of touch with the leading group, started his own charge and climbed several positions, overtaking everyone except the leader Cameron.
Always within visual range of Cameron, the race became a battle of mental toughness. Cameron prevailed and proved the strongest runner overall and finished with a time of 16:19 to claim his first overall victory of the season with total time of 28:00. Cameron was racing within the junior category but on this day no one challenged his decisive victory. Second position in the running was taken by Muetze who ran a very intelligent race saving energy for the run in the second half. The third step of the podium was taken by Fox just 9 seconds ahead of McDermott who had to settle for fourth position. Scott completed the top five.
In Category B, Scott dominated and was clear winner in all the stretches of the race marking the fastest times in all of them and finishing in first position of her category and fifth overall. Holly Mudd enjoyed a good performance on her debut in the season to finish second position. Veronica Plunkett took third place.
The club would also like to praise all the efforts of the members over the first half of the season who have participated and given their best efforts.
Carrefour, Power Horse, 2XU, Sport in Life, Nestle Pure Life, Wolfi’s Bike Shop, Saab and Riyadh Palace Hotel sponsored the club’s events.
