Specter of sectarianism

The article “The Syrian conflict and specter of sectarianism” (June 27) by Aijaz Zaka Syed was very informative and reflected the amount of hard work and extensive research that was done to write it. Indeed, the Syrian conflict is taking a huge toll on innocent people, especially women and children. They do not have food, shelter, medicine, education, clothes and are wanting desperately for the war to end.
The war exposes the complete hypocrisy of Russia and China. In order to protect their vested interests, they are not allowing the UN to interfere in Syria to settle the issue.
Hezbollah’s hypocrisy is also out in the open. They are friends of none. Muslim community was under the false impression that Hezbollah would help out Palestinians to have their freedom by defeating Israeli forces, but as the world has seen, it was just hype and there was no sincerity in their action and claim.
Likewise, Iran proclaims that it’s a peace loving nation, wants to have good relations with their neighbors, but in reality, it has created rifts in Bahrain, Syria, and Iraq by sending miscreants in these countries.
Iran, the Hezbollah and the Assad regime simply do not understand that killing innocent people and creating a gulf between Sunnis and Shiites will not help them, instead they will be in a more precarious situation as war always brings havoc and devastation on both sides. It is high time Syria understood the importance of peace and stopped killing innocent people. — Anees Lokhande, Alkhobar
