Curtains fell on a mime festival and contest organized by the Cultural and Arts Festival Society in Taif with a number of prizes awarded to the best artists Monday night.
Mime is the art of creating the illusion of objects using gestures (hand movements) and facial expressions without the use of speech.
Chairman of the society’s Drama Committee Jamaan Al-Dhowaibi said the mime events presented over the past two days were also accompanied by a lecture on various aspects of the genre of mime art, in which emotions and actions are presented by gestures, expressions and movements instead of words. The lecture was delivered by stage director, Ahmed Al-Ahmari.
‘The World of Gloves’ was judged as the best mime show presented by Abdullah Al-Jaleed and Omar Sharif in the festival. While the second prize was won by ‘Sweet and Bitter’ presented by Abdullah Hausawi and Mahmoud Murad, ‘The Deception’ with Abdullah Al-Harthi and Mamdouh Al-Ghashmari as mime artists won the third position.
Fourth and fifth positions were won by ‘The Memoirs’ presented by Abdullah Al-Ghamdi and ‘The Search’ by Muhammad Al-Osaimi respectively.
The winners of the first five positions were awarded cash prizes of SR 3000, SR 2000, SR 1,500 and SR 1,000 respectively while the fifth was given a prize of SR 500.
In the concluding speech chairman of the festival’s judges Musaed Al-Zahrani expressed his admiration at the mime artists who presented a high degree of talent in conveying challenging ideas in a hilarious artistic form.
