Employment of Bangladeshi women as domestic workers in the Kingdom will be the focus of talks that Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment (EWOE) Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain will have with Labor Minister Adel Fakeih in Jeddah on Sunday.
Hossain, who arrived yesterday, is leading a five-member delegation that includes EWOE Secretary Jafar Ahmed Khan; Begum Shamsun Nahar, director general (Additional Secretary), Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET); Sultana Laila Hossain, director general, Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and Muhammad Ibrahim, private secretary to the minister, ministry of EWOE.
As part of its women’s empowerment project, thousands of women are being trained in Dhaka for employment in the Kingdom as well as in other Middle Eastern and Far Eastern countries such as Hong Kong and Singapore.
A Saudi delegation visited Dhaka in March regarding the employment of housemaids from Bangladesh. The recruitment process will begin after the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two parties.
The Saudi delegation also visited the training centers of the BMET, and were satisfied with the form of training given.
Housemaids are given a three-week training, while women are also given training for three months for jobs in garments and food processing factories in the Far East.
The government has stipulated $ 200 as minimum wage for housemaids working in the Middle East and $ 500 for other jobs.
