The Bangladesh International School in Jeddah sent a group of 10 students to participate in the digital media and journalism career conference in Fordham University in New York, which is taking place over the course of six days from July 20-26.
The conference is organized by The New York Times and the New York film Academy, in collaboration with the Lead America Program.
Abdul Kaium, vice principal of BISJ, said the students are getting a lifetime’s experience training at a leading academy among the world’s finest media experts.
“They are receiving firsthand experience in film-making, script writing, screen play composition, and documentary production as well as other exciting fields,” he said.
Stressing the importance of media, he said it shapes human thinking and in today’s world, has become an important and powerful instrument that dictates, decides, develops and dominates the human mind.
“We live in the age of democracy, however democracy can never shine and prosper without the powerful illumination provided by freedom of speech, commissioned by media outlets all over the world,” said Kazi Neamul Bashir, chairman of BISJ-English Section.
He said today’s teenagers are far more outreaching, venturing into careers unheard of in the past and not so popularly accepted or rather prejudiced.
“We, the educational pioneers of the Bangladeshi expat communities, have resolved to provide our children with every opportunity the world has to offer,” he said.
Firoz Alam, student counselor, explained that this is the third time BISJ students are getting the chance to travel abroad and mingle with our nationalities.
“We introduced extra curricular activities and workshops, in subjects such as digital media, to provide our students with broader horizons,” he said.
“There is a need to understand the world, which is becoming more intertwined and related. This is a great opportunity for them to get a taste of the way media experts work. In the last two visits, our students attended the Global Young Leaders Conference (GYLC), in which the students got a rare opportunity to visit the United Nations headquarters, the White House, the National Mall, Washington Monument, and many other fascinating places,” he said.
