The total number of accident and illness cases reported in the Eastern Province, mostly from Dammam, hit 2,855 in the first 23 days of Ramadan, Fahd Al-Ghamdi, spokesman of the Saudi Red Crescent Authority in EP, said.
Stating that there were 1,397 accident reports including fires, traffic and people being run over by cars, he said: “Reports of illness cases totaled 1458, including cases of diabetes, heart attack, food poisoning and coma.”
He stressed on the importance of providing the operation room of the Red Crescent with the exact site or location of accident or injury and precise information when reporting illnesses to facilitate paramedics taking appropriate action.
Al-Ghamdi said the General Directorate of the Saudi Red Crescent in EP had made elaborate arrangements for staff and equipment to deal with the holy month of Ramadan. “There are 46 centers for first aid across the Province and on main roads, as well as the other regions such as Al-Khub, Ahsa, Hafar Al-Batin and Qatif,” he added.
He pointed out that dealing with human lives was a challenging job for paramedics under extreme heat and added: “The other challenge is crowding wherever ambulances go, with people hardly making way for paramedics to carry out rescue missions."
He called on worshippers and visitors to help them do their duty by not crowding around accident spots or trying to move the injured. “This is a job for specialized and qualified paramedics,” he asserted.
Al-Ghamdi said that on Tuesday, the operation room at the Red Crescent received four cases of people being run over by cars. The first one involved an elderly person at the intersection of Jazan Street and his condition was critical. Another occurred at Khawarizmi Street and the third was a child at the beach, whose condition is said to be critical. The last incident involved a pregnant woman on the Jubail-Dammam Highway, he said.
