Wimbledon champ Bartoli retires after latest loss

MASON, Ohio: Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli has retired from tennis after losing her latest match at the Western & Southern Open.
The 28-year-old player from France has suffered through a series of injuries even as she enjoyed the highlight of her career this year, winning at Wimbledon. She was seeded eighth in Cincinnati and lost to Romanian Simona Halep 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 on Wednesday.
After two hours of considering her physical condition, she tearfully announced she’s quitting. Bartoli said her Achilles, shoulder, hips and lower back hurt continuously when she plays.
“I just can’t do it anymore,” she told reporters.
Her surprise announcement comes just six weeks after she beat Germany’s Sabine Lisicki in the Wimbledon final to claim her first and only grand slam title.
“Well, it’s never easy and obviously there is never a time to say it or whatever, but that was actually the last match of my career,” said Bartoli, wiping the tears from her eyes. “It’s time for me to retire and to call it a career.
“I feel it’s time for me to walk away.”
