PHNOM PENH, Cambodia: Six people in northern Cambodia were killed when their homemade tractor ran over an anti-tank mine left over from the country’s three decades of civil war.
An official from the government agency that oversees the clearance of land mines said Thursday that the victims were farmers in the northern province of Preah Vihear returning from planting rice. A seventh man was critically injured.
The accident on Wednesday underlined the danger posed by an estimated 4 million to 6 million land mines and other pieces of unexploded ordnance that kill or maim about 200 people each year. The last active hostilities took place about 15 years ago.
