Harbi, Umari reach final in Prince Faisal bin Salman Cup

Saudi Arabia’s Abdullah Al Harbi and Muhammad Al Umari both qualified for the final in the individual open weight category after victories against players of Egyptian and Jordanian teams on Tuesday in the Open International Karate Championship for Prince Faisal bin Salman Cup at the Muhamad bin Abdul Aziz Sports City here.
The final match is set for Wednesday afternoon.
To play for third place are Abdullah Al Fifi and Mu’az Al Ghamdi, who are also among the 15-member Saudi team entered in the four-day competition that ends Wednesday. Madinah Gov. Prince Faisal bin Salman is expected to attend the final matches and awarding ceremony Wednesday.
In the local championship for clubs and organizations, Al Hilal club won a gold medal for under 84 kg weight category courtesy of Nawaf An Nazhan. Al Wehdah club’s Rayyan Wasili won the silver medal.
Imad Al Maliki and Mish’al Ath Thibaiti, of Al Hilal and Okaz clubs, qualified for the final match for 60 kg., while Fahad Al Khath’ami and Badr Al Utiaibi, of Al Hilal and Ash Shabab clubs, reached under 67 kg. weight category final.
Players of the Turkish national team compete Wednesday in the team event along with teams of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE, and Jordan. The Pakistani team failed to make the trip here despite assurances given to the organizing committee of the championship.
Ibrahim Al Qannas, chief of the championship organizing committee, expressed his appreciation to Shaikh Saud Al Luwahiq, member of the Madinah Council, for his support in helping in make the championship a success.
Dr. Amin Al Humood, secretary of the Saudi Union, said that the championship is going very well and produced outstanding performances from the Saudi team.
