Manziel’s the man as Texas A&M rolls over Rice

NEW YORK: Johnny Manziel’s day began late because of the NCAA and ended early because of his mouth. In between he looked like Johnny Football at his best.
After serving his first-half suspension, the Heisman Trophy winner threw three TD passes, scrambled for 19 yards — and, well, acted up — while No. 7 Texas A&M rolled over Rice, 52-31, on Saturday in College Station, Texas.
Manziel sat out the opening half because of what the school called an ‘‘inadvertent’’ violation of NCAA rules involving signing autographs.
His first touchdown came on a 23-yard pass to Mike Evans on A&M’s second drive of the second half. But just before that, Manziel got into it with a Rice defender, appearing to mimic signing an autograph while getting up from a tackle.
Coach Kevin Sumlin said he didn’t see that exchange, but would have ‘‘done something about it’’ if he did.
Manziel ended his day by getting yanked following an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for pointing at the scoreboard after a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.
‘‘A foolish penalty at the end,’’ Sumlin said. ‘‘No matter what the comments are or what. He’s going to face that every week with the people chirping. That’s not OK, and obviously I addressed that on the sideline right after the play. That’s something he’s going to have to deal with every week.’’
Manziel came in on Texas A&M’s first offensive series of the second half. He scrambled for 12 and 7 yards, threw an incompletion and then was sacked, and the Aggies capped his first drive with a 44-yard field goal.
Eastern Washington 49 Oregon State 46: Vernon Adams passed for 411 yards and ran for 107, including the go-ahead score with 18 seconds left as the visiting Eagles upset the No. 25 Beavers.
It was the third time that a Football Championship Subdivision team has beaten a ranked Football Bowl Subdivision team, and the first time since James Madison beat Virginia Tech in September 2010.
Adams overwhelmed the Beavers, throwing for four touchdowns and running for two, completing 23 of 30 passes despite leaving the game twice — once with cramping and a second time after taking a hard hit.
Sean Mannion threw for 422 yards and Brandin Cooks had 13 catches for 196 yards for the Beavers.
Washington 38 Boise State 6: Keith Price threw a pair of third-quarter touchdown passes to become the school’s all-time leader as the Huskies stunned the No. 19 Broncos in Seattle.
Price was intercepted on his first pass and he was nearly perfect from there, completing 23 of 31 passes for 324 yards. He found Kasen Williams on a 19-yard TD on Washington’s first possession of the second half and his 18-yard strike to Josh Perkins gave Washington a 24-6 lead late in the third quarter.
Ohio State 40 Buffalo 20: Braxton Miller threw two touchdown passes before fighting leg cramps and Jordan Hall ran for two scores to lead the No. 2 Buckeyes past the Bulls in Columbus, Ohio.
Oregon 66 Nicholls State 3: In Eugene, Oregon, Marcus Mariota threw a touchdown pass and ran for two scores as the No. 3 Ducks made easy work of the Colonels.
Mariota completed 12 of 21 passes for 234 yards before sitting after the third quarter. Mariota also ran for 113 yards.
Florida 24 Toledo 6: Mack Brown ran 25 times for 112 yards and two touchdowns as the 10th-ranked Gators topped the visiting Rockets for their 24th consecutive season-opening victory.
LSU 37 TCU 27: Terrence Magee ran for two touchdowns after halftime, Zach Mettenberger threw for 251 yards with a key late score, and the 12th-ranked Tigers held on in Arlington, Texas.
Odell Beckham’s 75-yard kickoff return set up a 20-yard TD pass from Mettenberger to Jarvis Landry with six minutes left.
B.J. Catalon returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown and scored on a 26-yard run for the No. 20 Horned Frogs.
Oklahoma State 21 Mississippi State 3 : J.W. Walsh threw for 135 yards and ran for 125 yards and a touchdown to lead the No. 13 Cowboys over the Bulldogs in Houston.
Notre Dame 28, Temple 6: Tommy Rees threw a pair of 32-yard touchdown passes to DaVaris Daniels and a 66-yard scoring pass to Troy Niklas as the Irish had three quick scoring drives en route to a victory in South Bend, Indiana
Texas 56, New Mexico State 7: David Ash threw four touchdown passes and ran for another as the No. 15 Longhorns piled up a school-record 715 total yards in their home victory.
Oklahoma 34, Louisiana-Monroe 0: Freshman quarterback Trevor Knight threw three touchdown passes and rushed for 103 yards to lead the 16th-ranked Sooners past the Warhawks in Norman, Oklahoma
Michigan 59, Central Michigan 9: Devin Gardner ran for two touchdowns and threw for another in the first half as the 17th-ranked hosts topped the Chippewas. It was the highest-scoring opener for the Wolverines since 1905, when they beat Ohio Wesleyan, 65-0.
Nebraska 37, Wyoming 34: Ameer Abdullah and Imani Cross each ran for more than 100 yards, Taylor Martinez passed for three touchdowns, and the 18th-ranked Cornhuskers survived at home, winning its nation-leading 28th straight opener.
