Mohamed Hassan Kabeera said embassy representatives were yet to meet Ethiopian domestic workers accused of murder despite an official request filed by the mission with authorities.
The embassy is still waiting for a response to a formal request to meet their citizens, some of whom have suffered injustice, he said.
The Ethiopian ambassador said that the main reason accounting for domestic workers escaping from employers was dispute and conflict.
“We have received word about the killing of two children by Ethiopian workers. We are saddened by this incident and we are trying to meet the accused to find out the truth. However, such visits must usually be organized through official channels, which the embassy is working on,” he said.
According to embassy information, workers either flee due to disputes or a desire to get abetter monthly income. As a result, they are often lured into the temptation to work for non-sponsors, he said, adding that “Estimates claiming that 40 percent of Ethiopian workers run away is an exaggeration.”
Runaway cases do not exceed two to three percent, said the ambassador. He urged the Ministry of Labor to verify this information.
There are more than 400,000 Ethiopians residing in the Kingdom.
