Is it art as young Saudis raise cars on stones?

A hot new trend this summer among young Saudis with time on their hands is mounting cars on elaborate stone structures. This unusual hobby has captured the imagination of many in tourist areas such as Hail, Abha, Taif and the Eastern Province.
It may not qualify as a work of art, but it certainly adds an aesthetic touch to the normal car. The hobby, which is starting to become quite competitive, does require a certain level of creativity and vision, and a touch of professionalism. One can see young men leaving no stone unturned in giving expression to their newfound passion on the outskirts of these cities.
Abdullah Al-Harbi, one such youngster from Qasim, explains: “It’s an artistic hobby that is popular among the young people in cold coastal cities during summer time. It helps them to be creative and offers them a competitive environment.”
Muhammad Al-Tihani believes that it is getting more popular with each passing year. “I went out with some of my friends and relatives who were visiting from nearby towns, and we embarked on our project to build elaborate stone structures for cars. We also enjoyed the beautiful surroundings at the same time,” he said.
Mamdouh Al-Sayyid says he really likes this hobby. “It helps me spend my leisure time doing something challenging and enjoyable. You actually create something that is really beautiful. I can see that it is getting increasingly popular among young men,” he said.
Salman and Aamir, two young men who enjoy the hobby, said the park administration gave them a designated area away from the family section. It takes anywhere between four to seven hours to arrange the stones. It depends on the size of the car and the number of participants.
Some young men said tourism festivals should include this activity and offer prizes for individuals and groups.
They said there are already contests for the best modified car and the best car that crosses sand dunes, among others. So why not hold a contest for arranging cars on stone structures?
