The parents of a two-year-old girl claim that doctors at the Maternity and Children’s Hospital in Madinah misdiagnosed their daughter’s illness, resulting in the child losing her eyesight.
Tala was taken to the Madinah hospital by her mother after suffering from high fever. A doctor allegedly diagnosed her as having suffered an epileptic fit. She was treated with medication and discharged.
However, the following day, the hospital allegedly produced X-rays taken of the child showing that she was suffering from bleeding in the brain. The parents claim that her condition was not picked up when Tala was admitted.
The mother said the hospital administration wanted to transfer Tala to Uhud Hospital but that no vacant beds were available. The child stayed for five days in the hospital and was then discharged because a doctor said her health had improved, the mother said.
However, her condition worsened. “She was fast losing her vision and there was fluid coming out of her mouth,” the mother said.
The family took Tala back to the hospital. There were no beds available in intensive care, so she stayed in the ER for three days, said the mother.
“When I took my girl to Uhud Hospital, they claimed that her condition was the result of domestic violence. This was to camouflage the maltreatment our child suffered earlier,” said the mother, who added that the hospital administration has called the police to investigate the case.
She said she and her husband were held in police custody for one night but have filed a complaint with the health affairs department in Madinah and want the doctors punished for their alleged misdiagnosis. They also want their child transferred to a specialist hospital for treatment.
