Protect Syria

The United Nations should punish Syrian President Bashar Assad not only for using chemical weapons but also for the crimes he and his cronies have committed during the two-and-half year uprising. Everybody is just talking about chemical weapons as if the conventional weapons don’t kill or inflict injuries. What is the difference?
I fear that the time given to Assad would be enough for him to destroy the basic infrastructure of Syria so as to make it almost impossible for any new government to run the country peacefully. The United Nations should also take this situation into account and make necessary arrangements to protect vital installations. Even the opposition that is fighting Assad’s brutality should also be mindful of this important issue. In the long run, it will be Syria and its people who will suffer. — Rachid Samman, Cairo
