Finally the Syrian government has provided a long list of chemical weapons to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. It is the first step in getting rid of such lethal weapons to help save the humanity from disasters in the future.
It is high time that this body also publishes a report about the countries suspected to have developed such weapons, so that necessary action is taken before they are used. The United Nations should develop a mechanism to prevent even the development of such weapons. Since, the Syrian government is under pressure from the UN and the world and doing everything to prevent the United States from attacking the country, this should be used as a golden opportunity to resolve the Syrian crisis once and for all.
Now the Syrian regime is calling for a cease-fire as the first step toward a peaceful solution, it should be implemented through a UN resolution where all the warring factions should agree on a clear timetable to resolve the issue. The solution, as a matter of fact, lies with the people of Syria rather than the government or the groups fighting the government. The United Nations resolution should include the following steps:
1) Immediate ceasefire monitored by UN inspectors
2) Timeframe for destruction of chemical weapons
3) Installation of an interim government
4) Arrangements to ensure return of all refugees
5) Election schedule where all the Syrian could participate
6) Handing over power to elected representatives
This is the only way out of crisis and Muslim countries should play an active role in resolving this crisis peacefully. There are thousands of Syrian expatriates in the Kingdom who are not able to visit their country to see their loved one. They will also need financial and humanitarian support to rebuild their country. — Tariq Salman Alvi, Riyadh
