The Shumaisy deportation center is now home to over 20,000 illegals mostly from Ethiopia, Indonesia, Egypt and Yemen.
The center is a well-equipped facility with 460 wards and holds 29,900 people at a time, with separate men and women areas, said Col. Badr Al-Saud, director of public relations and media at Makkah Police.
The center now houses 11,962 men, 8,927 women illegals, and eight Saudi men for transporting undocumented workers, he said. Ethiopians and Indonesians make up the majority of the center's population.
The detained illegals would be deported after finalizing their procedures, including recording their biometric details, he said.
The labor raids have not targeted private houses, at this point, and are limited to public areas and interstate roads, Al-Saud said. The security agencies, however, would soon target rest houses and slum areas suspected of providing shelter to illegals.
He urged citizens to continue reporting illegals by calling 999.
