NGO asks Saudi Arabia to aid death row Filipino

RIYADH: An international NGO with volunteer goodwill ambassadors in 193 countries around the world has asked the people of Saudi Arabia to help a Filipino on death row be set free on humanitarian grounds.
The inmate must pay SR 2 million as the remaining blood money from the required amount of SR 3 million, or $ 800,000, to save him from execution He has spent 12 years in Eastern Province prison. He was convicted of killing a Saudi national in 2000 in the Eastern Province. But he was granted forgiveness on Feb. 27, 2011, by the victim’s family if he paid the blood money.
Many OFWs have helped in campaigning to save the life of Rodelio “Dondon” Lanuza through various networking sites, including Facebook and Twitter.
Among those helping his cause include a group of Filipino business people led by Fil Am leader Loida Nicolas Lewis, a philanthropist from New York; Jules M. Ragas, based in Saudi Arabia; and Janice Azur, based in Bahrain.
In his letter to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah, founding chairman of the Southern Philippines Muslim Unity and Development Association, Dr. Datu Camad M. Ali said, “In line with our objectives of fostering world unity and cooperation among Muslims and Non-Muslims, as well as promoting world peace, understanding and international friendship mission, and on the occasion of your 82th National Day, we write on behalf of Dondon Lanuza, a Filipino worker who is still languishing in jail under death row while the family and all sympathizers failed to raise the blood money moving heaven and earth, while the world faces the most challenging economic crisis in a lifetime we seek immediate assistance for representation.”
In separate letter to King Abdullah, SPMUDA International Ambassador for Peace and Hope Kurt A. Alleyne said: “My humble and gracious thanks to Your Majesty for your dedication to humanity and any efforts you feel you wish to make. I look forward to resolution in this matter and I pray for your intercession. This matter leaves my desk in a personal manner Your Majesty and I make my request as such.”
