No. 25 Stanford rolls past Duke 50-13

STANFORD, California: Drew Terrell returned a punt 75 yards for a score and caught a 19-yard touchdown pass, Ed Reynolds took one of his two interceptions for another touchdown and No. 25 Stanford rebounded from a disappointing debut to roll past Duke 50-13 on Saturday night.
Josh Nunes completed 16 of 30 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns, showing more flair in his second start since No. 1 overall pick Andrew Luck left for the NFL. The redshirt junior overcame his first interception to move the Cardinal (2-0) offense with a strong and steady hand that never surfaced in a 20-17 win over San Jose State last week.
Jordan Richards also picked off a pass by Duke’s Sean Renfree to highlight a dominant defensive effort by Stanford in a final tuneup before hosting second-ranked Southern California next week.
Arizona State 45 Illinois 14: In Tempe, Arizona, Taylor Kelly completed 18 of 24 passes for 249 yards and a touchdown, and Arizona State rolled past Illinois 45-14 to improve to 2-0 under new coach Todd Graham.
Kelly’s backup, Michael Eubank, was 5 of 5 passing for 69 yards and two touchdowns and ran 7 yards for a score. Chris Coyle matched a school record for tight ends with 10 catches, totaling 131 yards and two scores. He caught six passes for 73 yards all of last season.
Illinois (1-1) was without quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase because of an ankle injury, but the Illini’s biggest problem was on defense, especially against the pass.
Illinois joined Nebraska (to UCLA) and Wisconsin (to Oregon State) as Big Ten teams to lose at Pac-12 schools on Saturday.
Northern Arizona 17 UNLV 14: In Las Vegas, Kicker Andy Wilder hit a game-winning 33-yard field goal with 12 seconds to go as Northern Arizona went on the road and shocked UNLV 17-14 .
It was Northern Arizona’s (1-1) first win over an FBS team in 25 years.
After UNLV (0-2) was charged with a personal foul, Northern Arizona quarterback Chase Cartwright hooked up with Ify Umodo on a 30-yard strike to give the Lumberjacks a first down with 21 seconds to go on the Rebels 16. The play gave Wilder a chance to play hero and he did so. Zach Bauman carried the ball 20 times for 109 yards and a touchdown, the only offensive TD of the night for the Lumberjacks.
The Rebels defeated Northern Arizona 40-7 the last time these two teams hooked up in 1992.
UNLV led 14-0 at half time before the Lumberjacks scored 17 unanswered points for the upset victory.
South Dakota State 31 SE Louisiana 14: In Hammond, Louisiana, Zach Zenner rushed for 278 yards and South Dakota State defeated Southeastern Louisiana 31-14 Saturday night, handing the Lions their first loss in a home opener since resuming football in 2003.
Zenner, with 34 carries and one touchdown, had the most yardage by a running back in South Dakota State’s Division I era, which began in 2004-05.
South Dakota State (1-1) led 13-0 at halftime, then the Lions (0-2) made it 13-7 on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Nathan Stanley to Michael Chaney with 10:12 left in the third quarter.
The Jackrabbits quickly pulled away. Austin Sumner hit Jason Schneider with a 46-yard scoring pass, then Zenner’s 35-yard TD with 3:05 to go in the third quarter made it 28-7.
SMU 52 Stephen F. Austin 0: In Dallas, Zach Line got Southern Methodist off and running with a pair of rushing touchdowns in the second quarter and then the Mustangs’ defense and special teams took over, securing a 52-0 victory over Stephen F. Austin on Saturday night.
After the teams battled to a scoreless tie at the end of the first quarter, Line scored on a 3-yard run and a 1-yard run. He finished with 60 yards on 19 carries.
Kenneth Acker excelled for SMU (1-1) on defense and special teams. He returned a blocked field-goal attempt 56 yards for a touchdown on the final play of the first half, and scored on a 77-yard interception return early in the fourth quarter.
San Jose State 45 UC Davis 13: In San Jose, California, De’Leon Eskridge rushed for three touchdowns as San Jose State defeated UC Davis 45-13.
Eskridge ran for 136 yards, scoring on a 5-yard run, a 17-yard run and in the third quarter, a 27-yard run for San Jose State (1-1). Chandler Jones scored twice during the third quarter, once on a 10-yard pass from Blake Jurich and on a 10-yard pass from David Fales.
UC Davis (1-1) got on the scoreboard first with a 45-yard pass from Randy Wright to Alex Cannon. The Aggies did not score again until the final quarter.
Louisiana-Lafayette 37 Troy 24: In Troy, Alabama, Alonzo Harris ran for 137 yards and a touchdown as Louisiana-Lafayette took a 37-24 Sun Belt Conference win at Troy.
The Ragin’ Cajuns (2-0, 1-0 SBC) also got a solid performance from backup quarterback Terrance Broadway, who filled in when starter Blaine Gautier left with a rib injury in the first quarter.
“Terrance prepares like he’s the starter,” Louisiana-Lafayette coach Mark Hudspeth said. “This is two years in a row we’ve had to come in here and play Troy without our starting quarterback and that’s hard.”
Broadway hit 10 of 16 passes for 143 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown pass to Harry Peoples to give Louisiana-Lafayette a 27-17 lead in the third quarter.
Troy head coach Larry Blakeney said after the game that he thought Broadway was better than Gautier, the starter who also left last year’s 31-17 win over Troy with an ankle injury.
Louisiana-Lafayette’s Jemarlous Moten returned a fumble 56 yards for a score in the first quarter, giving the Ragin’ Cajuns a 14-7 lead. Louisiana-Lafayette led 20-14 at halftime, but stretched the lead to 37-17 in the fourth quarter on Harris’ 2-yard touchdown run.
The loss for Troy (1-1, 0-1) spoiled a record-breaking night for quarterback Corey Robinson. He hit 46 of 70 passes for a school-record 485 yards and two touchdowns. Robinson also broke Troy’s career passing record and now has 7,786 yards. Receiver Chandler Worthy, who lost the fumble to Moten in the first quarter, had nine receptions for 154 yards.
UCLA 36 Nebraska 30: In Pasadena, California, Brett Hundley passed for 305 yards and four touchdowns in an outstanding Rose Bowl debut, Datone Jones sacked Taylor Martinez for a tiebreaking safety with 8:44 to play, and UCLA surprised No. 17 Nebraska 36-30.
Johnathan Franklin rushed for 217 yards and caught an 8-yard TD pass with 2:13 to play for the Bruins, who improved to 2-0 under new coach Jim Mora with an impressive offensive performance against the Cornhuskers (1-1).
Joseph Fauria caught two TD passes and Steven Manfro grabbed another from Hundley, the redshirt freshman who went 21 for 31 and coolly led the Bruins to 653 total yards.

After Jones’ ferocious sack put the Bruins ahead in a defense-dominated second half, Andrew Abbott intercepted a long pass by Martinez and returned it to the Nebraska 16, setting up Franklin’s TD catch.
Louisiana-Monroe 34 Arkansas 31: In Little Rock, Arkansas, Kolton Browning’s 16-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-one lifted Louisiana-Monroe to a 34-31 overtime win over No. 8 Arkansas.
Browning accounted for 481 yards of total offense and four touchdowns to lead the Warhawks (1-0) to their first win over a Southeastern Conference team since defeating Alabama in 2007.
The Razorbacks (1-1) played the second half without quarterback Tyler Wilson, who suffered a head injury after taking several big hits in the first half.
Wilson, who also missed the second half against New Mexico last season with concussion-like symptoms, was 11-of-20 passing for 196 yards and a pair of touchdowns before leaving the game at halftime.
Louisiana-Monroe outgained Arkansas 550-377 in total yards.
