I read with interest the article “Duterte’s risky strategy” (Nov. 6) by Rasheed Abou-Alsamh. The writer’s concerns about Philippines are genuine. I personally admire Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte for taking drastic action against corruption and drugs. However, he needs to be careful in his approach. His rashness may cause him and his country unnecessary trouble. Duterte appears to be a straightforward person but being the head of state he has to be diplomatic in his approach. We all know that the global powers don’t like weaker countries to go against their will or interests. In order to contain elements who don’t comply with their policies, they (the powers that be) are known for going to any extent. Many military coups in Asia and other parts of the world have proved to be the handiwork of western intelligence agencies like the CIA. Many books have been written on this issue. Instead of rejecting those theories as conspiracies, we should learn something and maintain a careful approach to protect our national interests. Many leaders in the past who defied the global powers paid the price. Duterte is a sincere leader who wants to work for his country. He should, therefore, be careful and make his moves tactfully.
