DUBAI: Speculation is growing that Spanish police are stepping up security after giant concrete plant pots were installed in an area popular with tourists in Benidorm.

The vast planters have apparently been placed at the entrances to a square known as British Square, which is packed with popular restaurants.

Now residents believe the pots have been left there as barriers to prevent a repeat of the Barcelona Daesh-inspired attack that saw a man drive a van through crowds of people in a busy street, killing 16 people.

Benidorm local Mike Skinner told British newspaper The Sun that he had also noticed an increase in “heavily armed police” patrolling the area.

“Huge plants in concrete pots placed at each side of British Square in Benidorm outside Cafe Benidorm and Lucky Rocks,” Skinner told the newspaper.

While police have not commented on the pots, many residents say they welcome the installations.

There were 120 people injured in the Barcelona attacks.
