Bio

Laxmi Dubey, 30, is a singer of Hindutva pop, a new genre of music mixed with the ideology of Hindu extremism. She evangelizes militant Hinduism through her songs.

Dubey is a symbol of post-2014 India, where Hindu majoritarianism is the defining feature of its polity and society.

She is from a middle-class family from the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. She inherited her love for music from her family of musicians and singers, but her political surroundings made her a fanatic.

As a child, Dubey used to sing religious hymns extolling the virtue of Hindu-Muslim unity, but now she uses music to polarize society.

She now talks of taking revenge against those who do not hail the Hindu god Ram. Dubey believes that “every house should be saffron” (the color of extremist Hindus, who abhor the multicolored Indian flag).

She wants to recruit foot soldiers to make India a Hindu nation. “Hindus used to be too innocent and docile to understand that Muslims are the biggest threat. They needed someone like Laxmi Dubey to wake them up,” she said in a media interview.

Her YouTube channel has around 20 million viewers. In her videos, she rails against Pakistan and calls for harsh measures against those who fight for the rights of Kashmiris. Dubey advocates the expulsion of the Muslim population from the Kashmir Valley.

She believes that India’s destiny lies in Hindutva, a political extremist version of Hinduism. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) advocates Hindutva and calls it a way of life.

Dubey wants to incite revolution through her Hindutva pop — a revolution against non-Hindus in India who do not hail Ram. She calls for revenge against the “beef eater” (Muslims).

BJP leaders have invited her to perform live whenever there are upcoming elections. “People who don saffron will rule. Only one slogan, only one name: Jai Shri Ram! Jai Shri Ram! (hail lord Ram)” she screams during her live shows.

In the run up to the general election in May this year, she advocated a second term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
