ISLAMABAD: A special prayer held at the President House in Islamabad today after a limited Friday prayer gathering to seek divine forgiveness at a time when coronavirus cases are on the rise in the country, reported the state-run APP news agency.

The global COVID-19 tally has crossed 1.5 million, causing more than 90,000 deaths. The pandemic has also affected Pakistan where the official number of cases have gone beyond 4,600, with 66 fatalities and 66 critical cases.

The country’s Council of Islamic Ideology has endorsed the government’s decision to impose social distancing and limit congregational prayers to limit the spread of virus. However, its chairman, Qibla Ayaz, agreed to hold the special prayer during his meeting with President Arif Alvi on Thursday.

During the interaction, the president urged the country’s religious scholars to play their role in creating awareness about the preventive measures against coronavirus, the APP added.

Pakistan’s religious affairs minister Noor ul Haq Qadri delivered the Friday sermon before the special prayer ceremony that was broadcasted live on television channels.
