ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Wednesday said his country wanted to know the information that promoted New Zealand Cricket to call off the Pakistan tour without playing a single match, informed a statement released by the foreign office in Islamabad.
Qureshi made the comment during a video call with New Zealand’s foreign minister Nanaia Mahuta in which a wide range of issues concerning the bilateral relations and regional cooperation between the two countries came up for discussion.
The New Zealand cricket squad abandoned its first Pakistan series in 18 years last month only a day before the first one-day international was due to start in Rawalpindi.
“On New Zealand Cricket Board’s last-minute decision to cancel Pakistan tour, Pakistan expected New Zealand to share the information that led to that decision to call off the tour,” the foreign minister was quoted in the official statement.
Qureshi added that the decision had “disappointed millions of cricket lovers” in his country.
New Zealand’s departure from Pakistan in September was also followed by a similar decision by the English and Wales Cricket Board, isolating the South Asian nation as a cricket host despite making rigorous efforts to bring back the game to the country after the March 2009 militant attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore.
“The Foreign Minister also suggested that New Zealand Cricket Board may consider and indicate another opportunity for the Pakistan tour,” the foreign office said.
