KARACHI, 22 May — The Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy, a grouping of 18 political parties, has said it will oppose any attempt to amend the country’s constitution or change the structure of government in Pakistan. According to local leaders of the alliance, ARD chief Nawabzada Nasrullah Khan, People’s Party’s acting chief Makhdoom Amin Fahim and the PML (Sharif group) acting President Makhdoom Javed Hashmi, at their meeting in Lahore took a hard-line against the military government. Ejaz Shafi, a Muslim League leader from Karachi, told this correspondent the ARD constituted committees to join hands with religious parties. The aim is to launch a coordinated movement against a government, which the ARD believes, has been trying to change the constitution and the political setup. The alliance said the military regime had been organizing seminars to mobilize opinion in its favor and called on its members not to attend any such seminar.
