NEW DELHI, 23 May — The president of All-India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), Syed Shahabuddin, has congratulated the people of the five states where assembly polls were held on May 10 for defeating the allies of the Bahratiya Janata Party (BJP).
In a statement Shahabuddin said “the All-India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM) salutes the people of Assam, Kerala, Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal for their political maturity in voting out the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) allies in three states and for not allowing the BJP or its allies in taking advantage of the electoral battle between two rival secular formations in Kerala and West Bengal.
The AIMMM also felicitated the Congress party for its victory in Assam, Kerala and Pondicherry and the leaders of the AIADMK and of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) for their victories in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal respectively. The AIMMM is of the view that though the election results may have no immediate effect on the BJP-led government at the center, they have laid the foundation for their rout in the coming assembly election in Uttar Pradesh and the next general election whenever they are held, the statement further said.
The AIMMM also called upon all secular parties to forget the past and rise above their present differences, in order to form a secular alliance and mobilize the people under a common banner which will decisively defeat the BJP and its allies and thus reverse the downward movement of the polity toward chauvinism and fascism.
The AIMMM is convinced that the religious minorities, throughout the country, will whole-heartedly support any move for the unity of all secular forces, as they all see their future, and that of their motherland, in the survival of the secular order, the restoration of the rule of law and the advancement of social justice,” the statement said.
