SR205m deals signed to build technical colleges

RIYADH, 24 May — Three new technical colleges will be established in Tabuk, Madinah and Hail shortly with the General Organization for Technical Education and Vocational Training yesterday signing deals worth SR204.84 million to carry out the project’s first phase.


The college in Tabuk, to be built on an area of 500,000 square meters, will cost SR63.01 million. The first phase will include administration and service buildings and the departments of electronics, mechanics and general studies.


The SR65.35-million Madinah college will be constructed on an area of 5.3 million square meters. It will also house 300 students. The Hail college, estimated to cost SR76.48 million, will cover an area of 1.19 million square meters. The three institutes are designed to take in 300 students each.


GOTEVOT Governor Muhammad Al-Dalaan, who signed the contracts with national companies, said the new colleges were planned to train Saudi secondary school graduates in various trades.


He disclosed that the projects and maintenance division at the organization had almost completed a study on setting up six secondary commercial institutes and five vocational training centers. It also plans to shift five existing training centers to new buildings. “Tenders will be invited to implement the projects during the current financial year itself,” he declared.


Meanwhile, the Economic Department at the Education Ministry has proposed establishment of a holding company for education. An informed source told Al-Yaum Arabic daily that the proposal was aimed at creating new revenue sources for the ministry.


The source said the proposed company would construct adequate number of school buildings and supply furniture, books, stationery items and other materials required by the ministry as well as the education departments in various parts of the country.
