The G-8 summit in Genoa was the 28th meeting of the superpowers and the fourth to be held in Italy. The eight democratically-elected leaders assumed the right to make decisions and policies affecting the entire world. Therefore, Genoa became a battleground between those who infiltrated into the crowds of peaceful protesters and the troops assigned to guard the leaders and protect the city.
Many international groups believe that the G-8 summit is only devising ways and methods for dividing the world for their profit — all in the name of helping mankind.
In fact, 51 percent of the world’s resources is in the hands of the G-8 and much of the remaining 49 percent in the hands of international firms many of which are of G-8 origin. Interestingly, the agenda for the G-8 was decided upon by ministers from seven of the eight countries; Russia was not among them. There were many protests from representatives of different international organizations, religious groups, scientific and cultural bodies but the operation goes as planned, paying little attention to pressure groups, international opinion and the media.
Of course, there were differences between the leaders and it was evident in the contradictory statements made by such traditional allies as Bush and Blair.
The international media covered the summit extensively and focused on the opposition movements more than the leaders’ meetings. The G-8 leaders, however, attacked the opposition and claimed that such movements are non-democratic and claim wrongly that globalization is destructive while its objectives are dedicated to help both rich and poor.
Nonetheless, it is still right for an opposition to be present in order to minimize greed and to moderate the effects of monopolies.
The G-8 leaders, in order to support their cause and to enhance objectives, invited their allies to be present in Genoa as observers. All countries, developed or not, must prepare themselves to catch up with the G-8; otherwise they will be taken over by a new type of colonialism; in other words, they must learn to survive in an ocean where sharks devour anything small.
The next G-8 will be held in Canada but for security reasons, the city has not been named.
