COLOMBO, 7 August — Sri Lankan air force jets pounded suspected Tamil Tiger targets in the island’s north yesterday as part of stepped up aerial strikes, the defense ministry said.
Supersonic Kfir jets attacked a command post of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) at Pallai in the Jaffna peninsula, ministry spokesman Sanath Karunaratne said. The latest attack came as part of intensified air strikes since Thursday.
“Attacks have been carried out on Thursday, Friday and Saturday too,” the spokesman said.
Meanwhile, a powerful group within the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) is protesting the policies of current SLMC leader Rauf Hakeem and is demanding that the party remain independent of the United National Party (UNP) and be open to collaborating with the government on constitutional reform.
The group is led by the Director of the Constitutional Affairs of the SLMC , Abdul Kalam, lawyer and close legal adviser to the late M. H. M. Ashraff, when the SLMC was cooperating with the People’s Alliance in the constitution drafting process.
