KARACHI, 6 October — Police fired tear gas and arrested 200 people yesterday as violence broke out before and after funeral prayers for six people gunned down in the southern city of Karachi.
Witnesses said about 3,000 people had gathered outside a mosque in Defense Colony ahead of the prayers.
Police fired tear gas as some participants pelted vehicles with stones and attacked a police van, police officer Muneer Sheikh said. He said at least 12 vehicles, including a police car were damaged.
Fresh clashes broke out after the prayers ended, resulting in more volleys of tear gas and police baton charges that injured some protesters. At least 200 people were arrested, said police officer Majid Dasti.
The six dead, including two children, were killed when unidentified assailants opened fire on a mosque after evening prayers on Thursday. Over 50 activists and supporters of the Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan were arrested for interrogation.
