TORONTO, 15 November — A man was arrested and charged with the double murder of Muslim students, a brother and a sister, in Canada.

According to Peel Regional Police officials, the 23-year-old Mehaboobbhoy Adamjee, a resident of River Street in Toronto, has been charged with two counts of second degree murder.

A young university student Naeem Amiji and his 23-year-old sister Nuzhat were killed in mysterious circumstances last week in a high-rise condominium building located at 325 Webb Drive, Mississauga, nearly 25 km west of Toronto.

But Adamjee’s dramatic arrest by investigators from the Peel Regional Police Homicide Bureau, removed doubts whether the deaths were a hate crime following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the US.

Police officials made it clear that the deaths of Naeem and Nuzhat had nothing to do with a hate crime.

According to the police, they located the fatally-injured Naeem Amiji in the stairwell of the high-rise building. Further investigation led police to a unit within the same building. Upon entering the unit, police discovered the body of Nuzhat as well. Naeem was quickly transported to nearby Trillium Health Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

Police did not release further information about the alleged killer and the motive behind the crime as the investigation is still underway.

However, a family friend of the victims, who asked for anonymity, told Arab News yesterday that Adamjee was a relative of Naeem and Nuzhat. He further said that the bleeding Naeem had written the name of the killer somewhere on the stairway with drops of his blood.
