JEDDAH, 28 December — A newspaper report about embezzlement by a cashier in a government office has brought to light another government official’s embezzlement involving SR218,741 in the Eastern Province, Al-Watan reported yesterday. An official inquiry into the matter is underway.
Public relations director at the Eastern Province police directorate Col. Hussein ibn Ali Al-Shayban Al-Yami wrote recently to Al-Watan responding to the newspaper’s report that the act of embezzlement was real but the designation of the official and the amount involved were different. With a warning that media reporters should be accurate and objective, Al-Yami wrote that the sum of money embezzled by the official was SR218,741 and not SR400,000 as alleged in the report. He added that the cashier mentioned in the report was not involved in the misappropriation. He had been mistaken for another official. However, the police director in the EP did not mention his designation or the circumstance of the misappropriation. The police director unwittingly admitted that an act of embezzlement had taken place in Dammam as the report in the Al-Watan report was about another city outside the Eastern Province.
