JEDDAH, 29 January — The Saudi Iron & Steel Company (Hadeed) has drawn up a plan to expand its flat products plant and raise its annual production capacity to two million tons. Expansions will include constructing an additional direct reduction module, an electric arc furnace, a steel slab casting machine, a slab-reheating furnace and a finishing mill stand.

This was indicated to a 30-member group of the Project Management Institute-Arabian Gulf Chapter (PMI-AGC), Dhahran, who visited the Hadeed plant recently.

“Hadeed, a member of the International Iron and Steel Institute and the Arab Iron & Steel Union, has been giving top priority to safety while making remarkable achievements,” a Hadeed official told the group.

“Aware of the importance of the domestic market, Hadeed has been adopting the principle of partnership with its domestic users, which has consolidated its share in the domestic market. An indicator of Hadeed’s success is the use of its reinforcing bars in major construction projects in the Kingdom. In pursuance of its commitment to serve and support its product users, Hadeed also endeavors to continue to take strides in safety, quality, productivity and Saudization,” he added.

The PMI-AGC group included President Sami Abdulghani, Saad F. Al-Dosary, GM-Saudi Aramco NA project management and also a member of the board of trustees of PMI-AGC, Hasan Al-Hasan, VP administration and PR, Abdulkarim Al-Othman, director Jubail unit, and Abdulaziz F. Al-Dulaijan, treasurer.

Mutlaq Al-Moraished, president of the Saudi Iron & Steel Company — a $3 billion steel company with 3,100 employees, and sophisticated plants, equipment and highly trained professionals — welcomed the group.

Ali Al-Sayegh, GM, direct reductions-steel plants, gave a presentation on Hadeed’s profile.

Since its establishment, Hadeed has been making continuous efforts to expand and introduce state-of-the-art technology. Major expansions accomplished include adding a third direct reduction module and enhancing the steel plant in 1992, adding a reduction and bar mill in 1993 and construction of flat products facilities, including a fourth direct reduction module, which commenced production in January 2000.

The PMI-AGC president and members presented a recognition plaque to Ali Al-Sayegh and Majid Al-Saif.
